Urgent action needed to stop licensing bill

Although this information originated from Reiki Unified, the proposed licensing bill would affect all forms of energy work and holistic care in Massachusetts. This is the 7th time the bill’s sponsor has attempted to get this bill through committee and into a general vote. We have stopped it only through our action: emails, calls, petitions, oral testimony, etc. This is relevant to anyone in the US — what happens in one state affects all states. SO PLEASE SEE THE INFO BELOW on how to help fight this destructive bill.

If you don’t understand why it is destructive, or if you would like more info, take a look at my blog from the last time we had to deal with this threat: https://reikibostonclasses.com/2023/07/06/once-again-we-resist-a-poorly-conceived-system-of-licensure/

Dear Reiki Unified Supporters-

URGENT – Immediate Action Needed- Massachusetts Needs our Help! The Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure is about to vote on S261 An Act Regulating Alternative Healing Therapies. If we do not take action there is a REAL posibilty Reiki will be regulated. This is serious and we must take action.

CALL TO ACTION
If letters in opposition or calls in opposition to S261 to the  Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure members are not received, this bill will be voted favorably out of the Committee and sent to the Senate for a vote.  The Senate will without a doubt pass this bill, and the Governor, Maura Healy, who had filed a previous version of the licensure bill will sign it into law.  If this bill is passed in MA, it will be duplicated in other states. We must keep Reiki free.

1.  Sign the Change.org petition, Protect the Right to Practice, Teach and Access Alternative Healing Therapies in MA
2.  Email letters of opposition to the Committee Members  (Sample Letter on our Website)
3.  Call the members of the Committee to voice your opposition of S261(Phone and Talking Points on our Website)

About Reiki and Covid

Last weekend, I met virtually with some of my senior students, and we discussed our experiences with Reiki and Covid. I am sharing our observations here, in case they are useful to readers.

First, I want to mention that all of us who have had Covid talked about the importance of rest, fluids, healthy food, and nutritional support. Reiki works best when the physical body is cared for properly! And of course, Reiki is complementary care, so it’s important to consult health care providers.

Second, I should mention the importance of protecting ourselves. Many of us have given ourselves hands-on Reiki when we had Covid. However, when we were working with others, we did not perform Reiki hands-on. Reiki, like a lot of forms of energy work, has excellent procedures for working with those who are not physically present – which are taught in Reiki 2 and are known as remote, distant, or absent procedures, depending on the Reiki style.

We all agreed that Reiki and various forms of energy work seem to make a significant difference in the course of Covid, and other types of infection. In ourselves and in our recipients, we saw symptom relief, apparent reduction in the length of active infection, and prevention or lessening of post-infection issues.

It’s not surprising that volume seemed to matter – the more Reiki we received, the more benefit we received. In my opinion, this is a general truth about Reiki and many other forms of energy work. We talked about the benefits of going to bed and doing self-Reiki, cycling through the hand positions until we slept, and then continuing when we awoke. When we were well enough to return to activity, we took “Reiki naps” whenever possible.

When giving Reiki to others, I find that some the advanced Reiki 2 methods can be very helpful to maximize the time we have available. “Stacks” with scheduled treatments and automatic treatments are great ways to make every minute count.

As is generally the case with any serious health issue, we used the “full-body treatment” with the standard positions, adding optional positions for symptomatic areas. Extra time and extra positions on the chest, armpits (lymph nodes), spleen, liver, and symptomatic areas are often used with Covid and other infections with a respiratory component. Immune points, such as the top of the shoulder blade (midway right to left, between acupoints SI 11 and SI 12), the point at the crease of the elbow (LI 11), and high on the pecs next to the shoulder (LU 1) are often helpful.

I have found that Covid tends to disorganize the energy body. The first time I treated someone with Covid, in March 2020, I was amazed at how disorganized my recipient’s energies had become. Positions to help reorganize are helpful during the illness and also for quite some time afterwards. Reorganizing positions include links down the center of the body, diagonal links (i.e. shoulder to opposite hip), and holding the toes. The classic way to hold toes is to start with the little toes, holding between thumb and two fingers, for 2-5 minutes. Then move to the fourth toe, repeating the procedure, successively working your way to the big toe. Some Reiki styles incorporate figure-8 movements done in the aura, and this can help to reorganize energies and strengthen energetic boundaries.

During the active phase of infection, we often gave full-body treatments with extra time spent on the chest, armpits (lymph nodes), and any symptomatic areas. We made sure to treat the abdomen thoroughly so that the spleen and liver were supported. Immunity points seemed to be helpful. If possible, we included some positions for energy reorganization.

After active illness, we continued to use thorough full-body treatments. The standard positions touch many of the areas where people might have post-covid complications such as brain, heart, or kidneys. We often used extra positions to cover the chest thoroughly and support the lungs.  We used immunity points, positions at the armpits (lymph nodes), and extra time over the spleen and liver to help root out any leftover pockets of infection. Positions for energy reorganization became very helpful for full recovery.

Later, if there appeared to be specific post-infection complications, we continued full-body treatment and made sure to thoroughly support wherever those symptoms manifested (i.e. brain, heart, kidneys, lung, liver). With vague post-infection symptoms such as fatigue, we gave full-body treatments and also prioritized immune points and reorganization of the energy body.

When someone has been exposed to Covid but hasn’t yet shown symptoms or tested positive, I generally use the full-body treatment with thorough coverage of the lungs, the armpits, and also the immune points.

If you have training and experience in crystals, essential oils, flower essences, or other methods, these can be utilized to add another dimension to any Reiki session.

I hope our experience is helpful as you deal with Covid infection in yourself and others. Of course, every person has their own individual needs, so follow your hands! Many Reiki practitioners can feel where the body particularly wants Reiki. Trust this sensory input and stay in those areas to answer the individual’s needs in the moment.

I wish health and happiness to you and your loved ones. May Reiki support you beautifully!

Explaining Energy Work

In our “fix-me” culture, supporting wellness might seem like a soft target. It might seem less powerful or important than fixing disease. But in fact, helping a person to balance and strengthen their system can be very powerful, for healing and for prevention.

What we do is not a substitute for medical care. Reiki and other forms of energy work are often referred to as complementary care, holistic care, or wellness practices. We work alongside health care providers. A client with a health condition should be seen by an appropriate medical professional. A completely healthy client should at least receive regular check-ups.

Although we are not medical professionals, experienced energy work practitioners understand that what we do can have profound healing effects. I’ve seen clients and students reduce or eliminate the need for medications, greatly decrease symptoms, and heal rapidly from injury or disease.

We help clients heal by working to increase balance and wellness in the body, mind, and spirit. We support the whole system and the healing process.

Energy workers never “treat” any particular condition. We do take our clients’ conditions into account when considering how to work with them. For example, if I am giving Reiki to a person who has an active case of pneumonia, I will probably spend extra time in the area of the lungs and the axillary lymph nodes. But this is not because I am “treating” pneumonia. It is because the lungs and lymph system probably need extra support, since pneumonia is present.

Similarly, if I am providing shamanic sessions for a person who is dealing with cancer, I might consult with colleagues about what types of energy imbalances they have seen occurring with cancer. I might do a bit of research to find out more about the form of cancer, so I can understand which body systems are most affected. I want to be as prepared as possible to help the client. This doesn’t mean that I’m treating the cancer, but rather that I am viewing the cancer as a clue to the person’s energetic imbalances.

In other words, a client’s health conditions help us to assess underlying energetic issues. We assist the person to transform their energetic issues. The client is then in a better position to heal any conditions that have manifested.

I find that clients and students are often confused about what energy workers do. For many, it’s a new way to think about health. They aren’t accustomed to thinking proactively. They aren’t accustomed to thinking holistically. They aren’t accustomed to thinking about deep causes. For some, to even consider subtle energy patterns is a complete paradigmatic shift. And our clients are often under stress and feeling desperate – which doesn’t help any of us to think clearly or assimilate new ideas!

Sometimes I need to explain repeatedly what I am and am not doing, and why it could be helpful. I often wonder if I’m failing to communicate clearly, but in fact, it’s not surprising that repetition is required. For all of us in US culture, and probably in all Western cultures, it is a big stretch to think about health in ways that are proactive, holistic, and deep.

Those of us who do energy work are at the forefront of that stretch. So we need to take a deep breath, and explain energy work as clearly as we can to each other, to our clients, and to our society. By doing so, we can help our clients, and we can also help our society grow out of an approach towards health that has, in many ways, become superficial, narrowly utilitarian, and alienating.

Health care practitioners have an absolutely essential role to play, and so do we. We help our clients and students to access their natural healing abilities. We carry the much-needed message of balance, deep wellness, and personal power.
